The Benefits of After-School Programs

There’s no such thing as a time where there isn’t an opportunity for a child to be learning, and after school care programs are a great example. These are chances to turn the aimless hours after school into productive learning times, and to do so in a way that can benefit kids socially as well.

At Smart Kids Development Center, our after school child care programs are designed to maximize each of these areas. Let’s look at some of the key benefits of after school care programs for children.

Sense of Belonging

Whether the program being run is directly affiliated with the day school (like our program) or whether it’s something separate, these programs can create a sense of community for kids. It lets them connect with kids in a different environment, whether or not those kids are familiar. There’s more adult supervision than on the school playground, meaning children with learning or attention issues are more likely to be included and feel like part of the group.

Academic Support

After school programs commonly offer structure homework assistance – homework can sometimes cause friction at home between parents and children, but with programs like these, it’s often done by the time they’re back home.

Improves Social Skills

A good program promotes cooperation, along with support and respect for other students. Kids will feel more secure about joining in with others, and sympathetic staffers are present in case children need help with sharing or taking turns.

Makes Learning Fun

In after school programs, kids will do lots of work together in groups, often in a low-stress environment compared to the standard day school programs. They may turn kids onto new interests like art or drama, allowing them to find new avenues for their creativity.

Provides Safety and Supervision

Research shows that kids are most likely to get in trouble or be the victims of crime between the hours of 3 and 6 PM – when they’re out of school and perhaps home alone. Keeping them busy in a program, however, removes this risk while also helping raise grades and limit behavioral issues.
